Hunting With Pixels’ Blog

So what makes you tick? Purpose as a pathway to happiness

· Blog

Last year we interviewed about 30 people about What Makes Them Tick. We interviewed people in Amsterdam, New Orleans, New York, San Francisco, Melbourne and Sydney and talked about what drives them.

Do what you love

One of the best things about working at Hunting With Pixels is that we have the privilege of hearing stories of people who really LOVE what they do. It’s fascinating to see how much drive our clients have; people who love what they do are really ‘in the zone’.

HWP Monthly Braindump: explainer videos, communication styles, technology and global poverty

· Blog

At Hunting With Pixels we get together once a month to share with each other what new skills we’ve learned so we can share ideas and knowledge in a fun way. We’d love to see you at our next Braindump on the 14th of September at 18.30 at the HWP Headquarters on level 1, 270 King Street in Newtown. Tickets are $ 12 to cover for the included drinks, food and travel costs of speakers, which is pretty sweet I’d say! You need to book in advance so we know how many are coming, here’s the link: Our Event

Mikey Lueng: Travel, Technology & Global Poverty.

Mikey Leung is a filmmaker, web designer and co-author of Bangladesh: The Bradt Travel Guide. Mikey believes that tourism could become a significant vehicle of poverty eradication. Through filmmaking, crowdsourcing, web design and storytelling, he’s working to create economic empowerment, through tourism, in developing countries such as Bangladesh. Mikey will share his story of facing poverty first hand, and talk about how creativity is powering his journey to create social change. Mikey will be delivering this talk at TEDxDhaka in late September, so our Braindump is where you’re hearing it first!

Robert Moorman: dealing with people who do your nut in.

Ever been in an argument between a ‘go getter’ and an ‘analytical type’? Without knowing it? One just wants to get the thing done, and the other bangs on about needing more info? Is there someone who will insist on crushing your Big Creative Dream with pesky details like finance, timelines and the fact that releasing tigers in Centennial Park may be against the law? How do you communicate effectively with people who think totally different than you do and get the best result for everyone involved? Robert shares some insights and offers some practical steps. Robert is the creative director of Hunting With Pixels. He’s also dutch which requires him to wear clogs and eat raw herring. Ugh.

Raphael Ariello: How to build an explainer video

Explainer videos are everywhere. How do you build one that gets the message across? Raphael Ariello has been doing an internship with Hunting With Pixels for the past four months and we’re fully intending to suck all the information out of his brain before he gets on the Air France back home.

Film Viewing

At the end of the night our speakers will show a ground breaking or thought provoking work and do discussion and Q&A on it.

Volunteers needed!

If you’d like to learn more about camera operating, multi camera switching or audio, let us know; there are still some openings in our team of producers.

Short Takes: communication with purpose on the 20th of September 2012

· Blog

There’s so much media around us, trying to outshout each other and get their Key Messages in our heads; it seems to get harder to get through all the time.

Blast!

Some seem to think that it’s about shouting even louder; blast Facebook, buy Twitter friends and just repeat the message over and over again. Social media seems to only add to the information overload, and now we seem to reach everyone but touch noone.

Maybe it’s not about being louder

Organisations and people who communicate with purpose don’t seem to need to shout. People just naturally connect to the message.

How do they do that?

This Short Takes is about learning from people who communicate with purpose and build a following based on shared values. http://vimeo.com/48714077/

Anthony Carroll

Anthony is the Brand and Marketing Strategist for Yellow Sneakers, a Brand & Marketing Strategy Consultancy that specialises in helping businesses & organisations develop their brand.     Anthony will talk about purpose driving a brand or business, using the example of TOMS shoes, which was founded in 2006 by Blake Mycoskie. Blake witnessed extreme poverty while travelling in Argentina and decided to do something about it.

One For One

Toms shoes is based on an innovative social business model that Anthony will discuss in his talk at Short Takes. For every pair of shoes bought from Toms, they donate a pair.

Debbie Pask

Debbie is the Co-Founder of Rezinate, a business which aims to help people tap into the power of their own energy, to bring change, heal, balance and a find a clear sense of self and purpose.

Live with purpose

Debbie’s core passion is to help people discover & unlock their own ‘life purpose’ and then go about planning and designing their utopian business around it. Debbie will offer insights into how you can find your unique purpose and stay centred within that, so what you say and do is always authentic to who you are.

David Gravina

Social entrepreneur and grass roots activist Dave Gravina is the CEO and Founder of Digital Eskimo. Dave is also the founder of Do Gooder, a new online platform that provide anyone with a good cause – from concerned citizens to campaigning heavy-weights – with access to powerful, affordable campainging tools. Dave will show how not for profits can use creative campaigning to engage with their supporters and radically improve their fund raising results.

When / Where?

Communication With Purpose is happening on the 20th of September 2012 at the Hunting With Pixels HQ on level 1, 270 King Street, Newtown. Doors open at 18.30, the event starts at 19.00 sharp!

Parking Anxiety

For those who aren’t Crazy Dutch People who insist on riding the bikes everywhere, Newtown can seem a bit daunting parking wise. Here are some parking tips for when you visit the HWP headquarters. King Street parking is possible, but a bit off a long shot in the evening. There’s a carpark behind HWP on Wilson St, as well as the Franklins car park on the corner of Lennox and Church Streets. If all else fails, try the Camperdown Memorial Park on Federation Road. Our address is level 1, 270 King Street in Newtown. Here’s the Google Maps link.

We’re proud sponsors of the World PR Forum 2012 in Melbourne

· Blog

Welcome to Hunting With Pixels, thanks for dropping by! We’re very excited about being part of the World PR Forum this year because the WPRF is a unique event where we exchange ideas and have conversations about communication with leaders in the industry.

Communication Without Borders

This year’s theme is ‘Communication Without Borders’. As an international company with a very eclectic mix of people this theme really speaks to us. The future is about globalisation and intercultural communication: those who use digital media well to communicate to a global audience have a bright future indeed.

It’s about authenticity

At Hunting With Pixels we believe we should create content for our clients that communicates in a conversational tone; authenticity is key. We also think that media should be social: less speeches, more conversation and interaction. We’d love to have that conversation and interaction with you at the WPRF, looking forward to meeting you! The Subtle Art of Social Media – Kate van der Voort at Short Takes

· Blog

The last Short Takes, on May 3rd, was a bonanza for those seeking to better utilise social media in their business. We were lucky enough to have Kate van der Voort, founder of Social Mediology, give this excellent presentation on the subtle art of social media. Kate proposed a paradigm shift in your marketing effort, moving from a traditional, brand-centric strategy, to the customer-centric methods of social media. Counter-intuitive ideas like letting go of control for greater reach, being generous with free content, and engaging with customers rather than simply reaching them, were put forth and explained to an appreciative packed house. You can check out the full presentation below: http://vimeo.com/41965776 We’re thrilled with the quality of presentations that we’re seeing at Short Takes, and hope that you’ll be able to join us for the next one in July.

Special Offer:

At short takes, we normally steer well clear of any ‘up-sells’, but we were approached by so many people after the last event that we decided to get Kate back in for a special edition of her Social Media LIVE! workshop, especially for Short Takes attendees, here at Hunting With Pixels in June. In this half day workshop, you will learn how to use Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn strategically for your business, as well as hear about the latest trends in social media. We’ll also throw in a presentation on video SEO for those who would like to get more mileage out of their videos. Kate is offering a special of $300 per person (more than 20% off the usual price). Space is limited, so please email your interest to start@huntingwithpixels.com.au We will discuss the final date with you once we have our attendees. Hope to see you there!

Michael Jones’ presentation at last month’s Short Takes

We loved Michael’s presentation on business culture at last month’s Short Takes, hope you enjoy it as much as we did! http://vimeo.com/41115321 Michael Jones is a lecturer at the University of Wollongong, with a doctorate on management, looking at career commitment and motivation. He has been researching Australian business behaviour in relation to behavioural customs in other countries. His experience is not just based on books. After working in both commercial and private enterprise, and completing training as an Electronics Engineer with the Department of defence, Michael started his own company, employing several staff, manufacturing, importing and exporting electronic systems. Michael has been lecturing and tutoring management subjects at UoW since 2002. Like what you see? The next Short Takes is on the 3rd of May, and this time the theme is: ‘Social Media; business tool or distraction?’ Check it out here.

Social Media: a business tool or a distraction?

· Blog

Social media is huge. Social media is here to stay. It revolutionises everything we know and do and I hear it makes a mean latte too. With social media experts and bootcamps popping up and yet another new platform emerging every second day, have we lost track of what matters? One in three business owners is overwhelmed by social media and whether social media is actually effective as a business tool is a point of heated discussion, so it’s time to get enlightened by the gurus!

Let’s watch a video.

Kate is one of Australia’s leading digital media coaches and is passionate about using online technologies to connect businesses with the customers, communities and causes they care about. Kate’s presentation will be about how social media is a subtle art and requires a strategic approach with the right tools to make it work for your business.

Mike Boorn Plener
