How much is a video?

When you’re planning on enhancing your brand with online video, it seems logical to ask how much a video costs. The problem with video is that video has a huge amount of variables. Take this example; we can shoot a simple interview style clip for say $ 800 if we use a medium level operator and a basic lighting kit. That will create a nice enough looking clip, and if the content is interesting it’s more than adequate. We can do the exact same thing and spend ten times the amount by developing a concept, using a high end director of photography and getting lighting assistant and a high end editor on the job. Which is the better option?

Well that’s a no brainer!

Or is it? Think about this; the adequate clip will get you some positive responses and will help build toward a set of content that support your brand. Not a bad outcome. A superbly scripted, funny, engaging clip that’s more expensive could go viral and land you a job that’s ten times the value of the clip.

Price is what you pay. Value is what you get

Let’s check with that dutch fella has to say about it. http://vimeo.com/59872776

Before Language

· Blog

Have you ever traveled overseas? When you met someone for the first time, what was one of the first things you did? Most of us would raise a hand to say hello. What about when you go to a restaurant, how do you ask for the bill? No matter where you go, the universal sign seems to be a gesture with your hand as if you were signing a cheque. One theory as to how language was formed is called the Gestural theory. This states that human language developed through gestures that were used for simple communication. It wasn’t really important what the gesture was, because when you think about the origins of a gesture, it could’ve really been anything (well, maybe not anything). It was about why the gesture was being made. The primitive forms of communication worked because they knew why they were trying to communicate. Two types of evidence support this theory. The first being that gestural language and vocal language depend on similar neural systems i.e. the regions on the cortex (brain) that are responsible for mouth and hand movements border each other. The second is the fact that non-human primates use gestures or symbols for primitive communication. Some of their gestures even resemble those of humans, such as the ‘begging posture’, with hands stretched out in front.

We are not so different, you and I...

In our day to day, we still communicate using gestures. Whether it is pointing out a particular item or giving somebody directions, we constantly use gestures or actions to communicate. We wave goodbye or nod our head in agreement for the most part without uttering a word. Babies will naturally rub their eyes when they are tired, or make sucking noises when they are hungry, when they want to play; they make eye contact with you and smile. So what is your body language saying about you? More importantly, what is it saying about your business? The confidence you reflect in your business is a direct consequence of why you do what you do. The WHY is more important than the HOW and the WHAT. We’re too busy thinking about how we’re communicating, and about what, to think about why we’re doing it in the first place. If nobody knows what you’re about, well then you’re just another duck, in a line of ducks. The next time you feel you aren’t getting your message across, check your body language. Or more importantly, check theirs. What is it saying? Do they (the client, your mother, or even a stranger) know what you’re about? If there’s no passion behind the why, then the what probably isn’t going to be so memorable. “Words should be used as tools of communication and not as a substitute for action” – Anonymous. You can safely presume then, that actions really do speak louder than words. Does your inner voice and outer voice match?

· Blog

Your throat chakra (energy point) is the channel for your expression; of your identity, business, hobbies, creativity and friendships. This energy channel is happy and healthy when what you say matches up to who you are. If there is a conflict between the two, then be prepared for some physical repercussions in the throat area. Flu, colds, coughs, dry throat, sniffles, ulcers or any kind of physical ailment in that region of your body. Just as the physical body becomes weakened by not expressing your authentic self, so does the business if you are not communicating (marketing, speaking, connecting) with authentic purpose! We have all experienced a sales pitch that feels dodgy and insincere. Our radar (sixth sense) usually picks this up pretty quickly; customers feel the same about your business. They can tell whether you truly are living, breathing and expressing your truth through your career and business. They resonate with your passion, truth and clarity. We all understand the value of marketing – but do we really understand the true value of building connections with customers that is natural, authentic and shows the “real” us? People are hardwired to want to share on a deep, honest level. When they sense you are doing that, they become advocates of your business and talk to others about you. There is nothing more captivating in a business owner than a sheer love and alignment with what they are doing. The expression (marketing aspect) becomes less of a push out and transitions to a more magnetised approach – pulling in those that want what you are offering. Those who don’t feel magnetized by your authentic business, well; those customers are not long-term connections, and the sooner you let them go, the better. So, do you give thought to what voice you are using day to day in business? Are you communicating the purpose that aligns with the inner you? I am giving a 20 minute talk on this topic Thursday Sept 20th at Short Takes. Come along if you get the chance. And remember; always communicate who you are, as this is the most intoxicating channel for any prospective customer. Debbie is the Co-Founder of Rezinate, a business which aims to help people tap into the power of their own energy, to bring change, heal, balance and a find a clear sense of self and purpose.

It’s not about what you do, or how you do it. It’s about why.

A while back I had a meeting with one of our favourite clients: Concept Amenities. Michael Matulick, the CEO of CA shared a TED video of Simon Sinek with me:

What, How, Why

Simon Sinek’s talk is about how most companies operate:

Why, How, What

But there are companies who do the exact opposite:

Apple. Again.

I know. The Apple thing is a bit tired now, communication with purpose is really the one thing that sets them apart. Apple talks about Thinking Different. If you’re someone who’s attracted to that idea, you’ll also like the fact that they make beautifully designed, easy to use products. Their mp3 players, laptops and whatever they make is a proof of that idea.

What about you?

Is Why where it’s going, or is it just lofty nonsense to you? We’d love to hear your stories and share them.
